New Dark Age & the Gene Nazis
After World War Three, Earth entered a New Dark Age. With a very week central government and almost the entire population living in poverty, scientific, cultural, and economic advance was halted. This mirrored the Dark Age hundreds of years earlier. Many Humans formed vicious, barbaric, and sometimes ultra-religious cult like groups. It is sometimes referred to as “Post War Horror”, or “Post Atomic Horror” but these terms are usually associated with the medical issues afflicting humanity after WWIII and the Gene War (usually radiation sickness and other large scale pandemics).
Rising from the ashes of decimated Earth after World War Three, a group who came to be known as the “Gene Nazis” came to power. They believed in the purification of mankind through selective breeding, cloning, and genetic engineering. Many Humans suffering from the effects of genetic mutations, diseases, and starvation as an effect of the inhumanity of the War, supported the “Gene Nazis”. They soon amassed support in impoverished, barbaric areas and formed a religious like fallowing, subjecting there pupils to various scientific experiments. Other factions in the war included remnants of the factions of WWIII such as Communists and Islamist extremists and rogue units of the People’s Liberation Army refusing to except surrender. There were also a moderately sized group of American extremist nationals and a large worldwide eco-terrorist group, the Greens, along with countless other minor groups.
The Conflict
At first the Earth government ignored these extremists but eventually attempted to destroy them as they began a campaign to inform Humanity of the atrocities committed by every faction during the Third World War. (Cloning, torture, genocide, all that bad stuff, it was covered up by the post war Earth government). The fighting, at first, was contained to small areas and media presence was strictly controlled. With a major uprising in China the population of Earth discovered the cover up. Attempting to end the war quickly and preserve their United Earth government, Humans returned to the weapons of mass destruction they had used and condemned in the Third World War. Nearly eight million humans lost their lives and the entire city destroyed at the Battle of Wuhan, the first major battle of the war and evidently, one of the bloodiest. Fearing devastation, what appeared evident after the Battle of Wuhan, groups throughout the world rose up against the already weak Earth government.
Near the end of the conflict the war spread to the stars as groups of genetically enhanced humans fled to space. At the Battle of Luna the outdated Earth facilities were easily overrun by the revolutionaries. They proceeded to Mars, the moons of Jupiter, Alpha Century and other possible sanctuaries. As the war on Earth came to a close the new government set about amassing a fleet to colonize space and destroy the Human extremist factions there. The Battle of Mars led to the first major stages of terraforming the planet and the first long term colony on the red planet.
Aftermath
The war resulted in the deaths of three to eight hundred million humans (the exact numbers are unknown) and gave rise to Fascist Earth. The new government advanced and spread throughout the stars. Parts of Earth remained in “Post War Horror” and in the New Dark Age for over a hundred years. The few genetically enhanced “supermen” that have survived the war and subsequent imprisonment are for the most part forgotten about by their mainline Human counterparts. Most are held without formal charges on confidential penal colonies. Most were executed upon there capture. Small groups are still unaccounted for and are presumed to be dead, floating in space. They are somewhat bogeymen of Mars, used in stories to frighten children. Now and again, a rouge “superman” is found on Earth or Mars, or a small colony is discovered in the outer reaches of the solar system. For the most part, the war is considered to be one of the lowest points in human history. It has become somewhat of a forgotten war. “Humans, not willing to admit to the atrocities they committed upon themselves have conveniently forgotten about them.”
From Conner Wolfe:
My inspiration and many of the base ideas came from these. It is mostly a conjunction of both my own WWIII series and Shattered Citadel. I got the main ideas from Star Trek. (Nerdy I know right?) This is not cannon to the Shattered Citadel series.
